After Winning a Couple of Battles, Godzilla x Kong lose the (Civil) War: Weekend Box Office Results (Apr. 12-14)​

After two weeks on top, Godzilla and Kong's New Empire has fallen at the hands of A24's Civil War. With $25.7M, it's A24's biggest opener ever, almost doubling up Hereditary's $13.5M debut back in 2018. Coincidentally, I did not like Hereditary and I'm not particularly a fan of Alex Garland.

At the very least, I did not like MEN (no ) which was boiled cac hotdog water. He definitely fell off with his two releases after Ex Machina but now he's rebounded and got a major win. A major win at least commercially. Critically? This s*** got a B- CinemaScore which is better than the D+ that MEN got and Annihilation's C score. This dude Garland is all over the place.

That being said, Civil War has already grossed 78.6% of Annihilations $32.7M total. And that movie had a $55M production budget to Civil War's $50M. That's a win no matter how you slice it. Can it hold up in the coming weeks though?

A Foundationally Black one

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire lost half of its $31.7M total from last weekend and brought in $15.4M. It's up to $157.9M, nearly 2x its $80am opening weekend. It should pass Kong: Skull Island's $168M to become the 2nd highest earner in the MonsterVerse.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire held down the 3rd spot again, this time with $5.8M. With $96.9M, it's about to hit the coveted $100M mark, which in its 3rd weekend; Frozen Empire is in its fourth.

With $5.5M, Kung Fu Panda 4, took spot #4 after finishing 5th last weekend. And it's on-demand. It's the 2nd biggest movie of the year with $173.3M domestically and $452.6M worldwide.

Dune: Part Two jumped back into the top five with $4.3M. Its $272.1M is nearly $100M clear of the aforementioned Kung Fu Panda 4 for the top movie of 2024. Its $683.9M is tops worldwide and more than $200M clear of Kung Fu Panda 4. And it is also on-demand.

'Abigail' Fights the Good Fight but Can't Win the (Civil) War: Weekend Box Office Results (Apr. 19-21)​

With $11.1M, Civil War is two for two with a pyrrhic victory this weekend as it narrowly edged out Abigail to take the top spot. That was also more than the opening weekend of Garland's Annihilation, which made $11 million. It's got a $44.8 million running total which is still shy of it's $50 million production budget. However, the domestic running total passes Annihilation's $43M worldwide total. That should do it for Civil War at the top as next weekend sees the arrival of Zendaya's Challengers.

Fresh off of her Scream firing, Melissa Barrera is back with Abigail, the Universal vampire movie from Radio Silence. It took second place with $10.2M. That's a better opening than The Last Voyage of the Demeter's $6.5M. It beat Universal's prior vampire-centric flic, Renfield, which bombed with $8M last year.

Abigail should have a little more staying power: it is rocking a solid B CinemaScore compared to the B- of those aforementioned flics. Like @FlyRy said, this will definitely be on-demand in 2 weeks cuz it's a universal movie that made under $50M, which is exactly what happened to Renfield. I wanted to go see this on Tuesday but I probably will just wait for it to come on- demand and catch it with Stremio and my all-debrid subscription.

With $9.4M Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has reached $171.6M. That passes the $168M of Kong: Skull Island to become the 2nd highest grossing entry in the MonsterVerse franchise. Godzilla made $200.6M, which seems outta reach. With a $485.3M global running total, $500M is tight around the corner.

Guy Ritchie is back with The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which opened to the tune of $9M. This Guy is a machine with 3 movies released in the last year. Don't ask me how. That opening is 42.9% higher than Ritchie's The Covenant's $6.3M.

Spy x Family Code: White, which is not a Spy Kids movie but a Crunchyroll animated one, opened with $4.8M. That's well off the $11.5M Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—To the Hashira Training did earlier this year But it's already Crunchyroll's fifth highest grossing movie.

Shrek 2 made another $530K in the second weekend of its re-release. It's up to $2.9M.

I thought Abigail had a chance to break out some, but horror films at the box office continue to struggle this year. Maybe word of mouth can help it.

horror just isn't drawing audiences. the last few vampire films have flopped. all the nun movies they release every month. its too much. and it all looks too similar.

Zendaya Takes on all (Non-Existent) Challengers; Drop Shots her way to $15M-$7M Victory: Weekend Box Office Results (Apr. 26-28)​

Zendaya's "2 Cacs 1 Slut" is here in the form of Challengers, which weakly served its way to a $15 million opening. That could be construed as a solid start but this is a $55 million Zendaya, Amazon MGM feature. I mean Jason Statham's Beekeeper, also an MGM production, opened with $16.5M.

Zendaya's Spider-Man alum, Angourie Rice, just starred in Mean Girls, a $36M Paramount production, which nearly doubled up Challengers with a $28.6M opening. And both of those aforementioned movies opened in more than 3,000 theaters just like Challengers did. Hey, at least it was 6.8 times more than the $2.2M Luca Guadagnino's Bones and All did in its 2nd weekend wide release.

Lionsgate came through with the faith based Unsung Hero, which did $7.7M. Truly the unsung hero of this down weekend before we hit the summer at the box office.



Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire pulled in another $7.2M to hold down third place again. With $181.6M and counting, it's the 3rd highest grossing movie domestically, about to overtake Kung Fu Panda 4's $184.9M. Its $519.3M worldwide cume has made it the 2nd highest grossing movie of the year.

After 2 weeks on top, Civil War took a lil tumble down to 4th place with $7M. With $56.1M, it's A24's second highest grossing movie ever, behind Everything Everywhere All At Once and its $77.1M.

Fifth place belonged to Abigail which only fell by an impressive 49% and made $5.2M. The Universal vampire flic is up to $18.7M, which is better than Sidney Sweeney's Immaculate and its $15.6M. I'ma catch it on Stremio though.

Dune: Part 2 has passed $700 million worldwide with 704.2M: far and away the top grossing movie of the year.

Kung Fu Panda 4 has passed $500 million worldwide with $503.5M. It's the third highest grossing movie this year.

Ridley Scott's Alien is celebrating its 45th anniversary and was re-released in 1,750 theaters where it made $1.5M to finish in 11th place.

The Mummy is celebrating its 25th anniversary and made $1M from 1,236 theaters. This is one I watch every time it's on TV.

Monkey Man is up to $23.9M with another $1.1M this weekend.

The First Omen fell down to 15th place; it lost 1,000 theaters. It made only $700K but is up to $19.2M. That's more than Sydney Sweeney's Immaculate, which has made $15.6M through 6 weeks.

The ‘Ready or Not’ love was fantastic. I’m all for explosive gore being a staple in whatever universe Radio Silence is cookin’ up there, lol.

You’ll have horrorheads like me who will show out for these one-and-done entries out of general love, but there hasn’t really been a beloved and established IP horror franchise to rev up the general audience’s interest yet so far this year. ‘Scream VI’ was a big help in that department for 2023, as was ‘Evil Dead Rise’.

Will be interesting to see how things fare when ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ and ‘Alien: Romulus’ come out, two who I consider to be breakout candidates. I think Fede understands the assignment with the property and the WOM will reflect. I wouldn’t sleep on ‘The Watchers’ either, the directorial debut from M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter.

Titles like ‘Longlegs’, ‘Cuckoo’, and ‘Maxxxine’ seem to be beloved in the horror community, yet very niche. Crossing my fingers they can make a decent enough profit, but I’m not holding my breath. The rollout for ‘Longlegs’ has been incredibly fun to keep track of though, and ‘Maxxxine’ looks way more accessible than Pearl/X.
